Cert 3 Media 2011 Assement Task 1A with Luke

Alcoholic based mouthwashes (i.e. Listerine)
Pros:
These have the most research behind them. These are proven to reduce plaque, reduce gingivitis and improve overall health. Listerine uses essential oils as the active ingredient, and includes ethanol in various concentrations up to 25%.

Cons:
Due to the high concentration of alcohol, they usually have a burning feeling, which some people have a hard time tolerating. They are usually also not recommended for recovering alcoholics as it can trigger relapses.

Non-alcoholic based mouthwashes (i.e Crest Pro-Health)
Pros:
There are various type with various active ingredients. Crest Pro-Health uses cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC). There is no "burning" feeling.

Cons:
The overall body of research on the active ingredient (CPC) is less. As of 11/22/2010, the ADA website does not have Crest Pro-Health mouthwash listed as having the ADA seal of approval.
Some people also enjoy feeling the "burn."

Pros & Cons of Listerine Whitening Rinse
PROS...

Inexpensive for the number of uses you get from each bottle
Bubbles & foams in your mouth - you can feel it working
Doesn't have to be left in your mouth long to be effective
There's no "application process" and no need to wait around for the next step

CONS...

Doesn't taste quite as "minty clean" as the label states
Doesn't go with "morning breath" well
Can't get past the fact that I'm rinsing to get this product to "adhere" to my teeth, only to turn around and brush it off right away
